While responding to a domestic disturbance call, St. Louis police were confronted by a man who stabbed one officer in the bulletproof vest before a second officer shot and critically wounded the suspect.

A bulletproof vest protected a St. Louis police officer stabbed by a suspect who then was fatally shot by police.

The incident happened at around 4 a.m. when police responded to a domestic disturbance call, KSDK-TV reports. A mother had called 9-1-1 to request help removing her adult son from her home.

Once they reached the scene, officers were confronted by the son, who charged at police. One of the officers was knocked to the ground and stabbed in the bulletproof vest by the son, who was in his 40s. The attack left the officer uninjured.

When the suspect tried to stab the officer again, another officer opened fire and critically wounded the man. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.

The officer who shot the suspect is 24 years old and has only been with the department for a few weeks.
